Why I Love Audiobooks | Book Discussion

Hello, book lovers! 💕

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I love audiobooks. And that a majority of my reading gets done because of audiobooks. And I thought I’d take some time to pretty much gush about audiobooks, and why I love them so much. And maybe recommend a few that I’ve loved in the past that might get you interested in picking up an audiobook.

So without any further ado, let’s get onto the discussion!

I’m going to start off by saying that while I do get some of the audiobooks that I listen to free from my library, a majority of them I get from Audible, and this isn’t sponsored by them in any way. I just really love the service and use it quite often. And it’s relatively cheap for what you’re getting.

I think I got into audiobooks maybe three or four years ago, and I’m not entirely sure what made me want to start listening to them. It might have been around the same time when I started my reading bullet journal, and while setting up the monthly spread, I’d listen to music. And since drawing and coloring in my bullet journal took up so much of my time, I was missing out on reading time.

And I remember looking into audiobooks on my library’s free online catalog and being kind of disappointed that there wasn’t more of a variety of books that interested me. So that’s probably when I looked into Audible. And that really sparked my interest in audiobooks because literally any book that I wanted to read was also an audiobook. I wanted to listen to everything.

So then began my audiobook journey, and now I’m here. Pretty much listening to audiobooks instead of reading physical books (though I am trying to get back into reading physical books because there’s nothing better than opening a book and flipping the pages).

And I love it. The main reason I love audiobooks so much is because I get to multitask. I can get so much reading done while also doing other things like chores or working out. Or playing video games or drawing. It makes me feel so productive at the end of the day when I look back at how much of a book I got read while also putting laundry away or something.

I also get through them so much faster than I would a physical book. Most books I listen to at 1.5x speed, so even if a book is 10 hours long, it would take me maybe 6 or 7 hours to get through. And while doing other things, that time just speeds by. I potentially could finish an entire book in a day if I just solely listened to it all day. Which I’ve done before.

Because if there is a good narrator reading the story to you, you can get sucked in and forget the world around you. And that’s such an awesome feeling. Being completely immersed in a story. Feeling like you’re a part of the world that the author created.

And having it narrated just adds a level of depth to the reading experience because there could be a full cast of characters where there are different narrators for different characters. Or the narrator does different voices for each character. Plus there’s inflection in the way that the narrator reads, which could add suspense to thrillers or mystery novels.

A few audiobooks that I have loved were:

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (or really any of her books)

A Court of Thorns and Roses or Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (audiobooks are really good for longer, more intimidating books)

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo (or any of her books)

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

I could literally go on and on with the list of audiobooks that I’ve loved, but these are the ones that come to mind. They’re all fantastic in their own ways for any one of the reasons I’ve listed above.

So there you have it. The reasons I love audiobooks. I probably won’t stop listening to audiobooks now that I’ve gotten a taste of what it’s like to multitask while listening to them.

Do you listen to audiobooks? What are your favorites? I’d love to chat about them in the comments below!

I am a twenty-something-year-old who is an avid reader. I love anything from young adult fantasy to adult fiction to young adult contemporary. I also love to play video games and draw and watch movies and TV shows. And this is my safe space where I can gush about everything I love.

  1. Agree that audiobooks are amazing! I’ve done ~30 so far this year and they were all amazing novels that I would not have gotten to otherwise. I love the ability to combine my love of reading with other activities like work or chores. 😀
