Let’s Talk Art | General Discussion

I know that this isn’t my typical book-related content. But I thought it would something that would be fun to talk about because it’s something that I’ve been doing a lot of recently. I just figured I could have a post dedicated to my hobbies other than reading every so often.

I’m not sure if many of you guys know that while I love reading, lately I’ve been doing a lot of drawing. Mostly digital art. And for today’s post, I thought I’d discuss my art journey a bit and share some of my recent pieces I’ve finished.

So my art journey started in the middle of 2020, in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though, it was something that I’ve been interested in for many years before that. I have really cringey drawings from back when I was in high school that will never see the light of day.

But I found this YouTuber over the summer, Cheyenne Barton, who did really adorable drawings. And seeing her art got me interested in digital art since that’s something that she mainly does. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you how my thought process went from she does really cute digital art to I have to do that too. Thinking back, it feels kind of instantaneous. Like I immediately decided to buy an iPad and an Apple Pencil and start practicing digital art.

But I did contemplate it for a few months. And even when I did decide, it was a big decision for me to make because that meant putting out a decent chunk of money towards a hobby. Though, in retrospect to my reading, I’ve probably spent the same amount, just not in one go. But I justified it by telling myself that I could read comics and graphic novels on the iPad, which is something I’ve been doing a lot of.

Anyway, now that I have my iPad, I honestly can’t see myself without it. It has become something that is just part of me. Which brings me to my digital art.

It took me almost a year to figure out my art style, though I’m still learning and growing as an artist. And I wouldn’t say that I’m that good compared to many people I follow on Instagram. But I’m learning to accept where I am as an artist and know that I’ll get better as time goes on. It takes practice, and considering I only really started last year, I’ve come a long way.

And honestly, it’s something that I do for fun. It’s relaxing to sit down and start a drawing. I put on some music or an audiobook, and the time just melts away. It’s such an awesome feeling to see a sketch turn into a final product. Even seeing something that was originally a concept in my mind turn into something on the screen. Creating something is such an amazing thing.

And in the last couple months, with the beginning of spring, I have been really into bright and vibrant colors when drawing. It makes it feel so cheery and happy. Just seeing some of my drawings makes me happy, and I really hope that anyone else who sees them feels the same way. Because that’s my goal when it comes to creating art: make someone smile. Or at least feel something.
